Murals

Artists in India do not practice murals in a big way, some artist who do muralsrestrict themselves to around 2 or 3 mediums like glass and metal or fibre. Rouble Nagi is the only Indian artist to work in 33 different mediums, and has completed over 800 murals worldwide. Every art piece designed by Nagi is unique and is very site specific. Hotels, corporates and the Government have numerous projects where installation and murals are used. Murals are three dimensional or two dimensional wall installation work. These are made in mediums like glass, ceramic, metal , Mosaic , Tile, Cold ceramic and many more. Most people only know murals are paintings done on the wall, the term is ‘Fresco’.

Being a mural artist our projects are mainly commissioned work, we havetremendous demand from the hospitality industry. As we have completed Hyatt Regency (Mumbai,Kolkatta) Country Inn and suites for Carlson, Taj Varanasi,Mumbai,Goa,Chennai just to name a few. In the year 2015 there are more than 83 hotels that will be launched in India. The scope for murals has grown immensely over the last 5 years. Rouble Nagi has been doing murals since 2001, and has had over 150 exhibitions world wide. Rouble Nagi also works towards beautifying Mumbai with art, and her Installations can be seen all over Mumbai. The most famous being the ‘POP GARDEN’ at Worli Seaface. Citibank Mural

Citibank Mural

This installation is made in the Citibank headquarters in Bandra Kurla Comlex , Mumbai. The architect along with the CEO wanted to have an artwork in the lobby of the Building. The concept I developed was that we design a mural depicting the history of the bank since it is more than 200 years old. We designed a mural showing the first Citibank building in New York which was founded in June 16, 1812 to building till date. The mural did not need any explanation of what it was trying to depict, the design was meant to be self-explanatory. The murals were installed on the wall at a height of 16’ (feet) from ground and weighed approximately 600 kgs each. It still remains one of my favourite works till date.

Last Supper Mural

Last Supper Mural

As an artist one always wants to do something that’s close to one’s heart. When Arpita came to me with an idea of creating this fantastic visual spectacle, it was something I always wanted to do. As an artist I have seen the Last Supper created by various artists like Pietro Perugino,Paul Ruben, Dagnan-Bouveret and my favorites Dali and Da Vinci.

Just like the latter as Dali created the ‘Last Supper 'combining the typical Christian themes with modern approaches of Surrealism including geometric elements of symmetry and polygonal proportion, every artist I guess wants to create this masterpiece. I wanted to do it in a mosaic mix media format with architectural elements and a three dimensional visual effect, Arches were created to add dimension which were hand painted in gold on frames. Cutting tiles in such small sizes is not easy but that’s what makes tile mosaic so interesting n challenging to work on, blending n mixing different colour tiles together is fun in itself. Glass mosaic tiles had to be specially made as colors were not available it took time to put the panel together but am really happy with the outcome. Have done frescos and artwork making the apartment a visual treat.
